This week, you will continue examining your topic through the lens of disciplines; however, your focus when completing the Week Three assignment will be the reasons disciplines disagree. As you will see when you read Engaging Chapter Eight, opposing views may rely on the same evidence with each side interpreting the evidence differently.  


Select one of the sample essays from any of the Engaging chapters you have read so far. Identify the essay and respond to the following questions. 


What type of evidence does the author use? Be specific and cite examples from the text. How might someone who disagrees with the author interpret the evidence differently? How will you apply the information from Chapter Eight when writing your final paper?

In the essay "The Ethics of Eating Meat," the author argues that eating meat is ethical (Schwennesen). He uses first-hand accounts as evidence. He is a breeder of grass-fed cows, which he slaughters and sells. In the essay, the author says that he thanks the age-old practice of prey and predator. He later says, "This is life. This is ethics." (Schwennesen). This is a perfect example of why he views eating meat as ethical. One cannot argue that just like animals, humans live prey and predator life.
A person who disagrees with the author might view the act of killing cows as inhumane. In the essay, the author mentions that he saves calves' lives and butchers their mothers in the same afternoon (Schwennesen).
