Family Roles and Organization, Work Attitudes and Communication
Introduction
Understanding and appreciating one’s culture and other people’s culture is fundamental as one learns how different life dynamics among people influence their lives. I chose to explore my African American culture by interviewing my grandmother and comparing it with an elderly Hispanic Americans male friend. It would enable me to learn more about how people interact as families and friends, the different family and gender roles, and the attitudes towards marriage and education. Since people behave differently due to cultural influences, it is crucial to understand their cultures to ease interacting and embracing people in all aspects of life. Interviewing these individuals would also assist me in appreciating the two cultures’ nuances, hence aiding in the day-to-day interactions with my friends and perhaps extended relatives. In addition, religious beliefs are different in most cultures. Thus, this interview will enable me to appreciate other people’s faith and perceptions towards spiritual events such as death. Social interactions such as courtship and marriage are crucial in understanding how different cultures believe and handle them. Thus, since these interviewees are well-versed with the past and present elements of the two cultures, they would offer me critical learnings to acquire appropriate cultural awareness.

However, children remain subordinate because they should always address their seniors with respect and irrespective of their relations. In the same context, she emphasized that families emphasize education to overcome the discriminative system.
While responding to the question about alternative lifestyles, the respondent indicated that people are starting to accept the changing times because the culture predominantly valued officiated unions and discouraged single parenting. She combined this response with the emphasis that the current practices contravene their Christianity values because African Americans are religious and spiritual (Amon, 2021). They also believe ling in compliance with religious teaching would make death their ticket to eternal life.
The interview revealed that communication is essential in their lifestyle as they use verbal and nonverbal communication forms. They love using gestures while communicating to show freedom from when they were out of slavery till now. While explaining this aspect, the interviewee reported that African Americans still value essential ceremonies, including naming newborns an...
