Ethical Decision Making: What should Mathew Do?

Essay Instructions:

Your assignment for this week is to read the attached case and answer the associated question ("What Should Matthew Do?") This case was developed in a collaborative effort between faculty and students in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame.
Before beginning to write the assignment, you should take a few minutes to read A Framework for Ethical Decision Making (Links to an external site.). This should put you in the right frame of mind to extract from the case what you see as the pertinent, justifying reasons behind your position.

Suggested Format
These reflection assignments are meant to help you develop ideas, issues and questions to contribute to the class. Unlike formal papers, they do not have to defend a thesis, though they may. They may also have a personal (“I think”) and searching (“maybe”) quality to them. They must, however, demonstrate that you have engaged in a close reading of the assigned material. You must quote and analyze specific passages from the reading and use parenthetical page references.
Here is a suggested format to follow in these reflection papers:
a. in the first paragraph, introduce a specific issue, problem or question that the reading raises for you with respect to the case scenario
b. in two to four paragraphs, use specific evidence from the text, including quoted passages, to develop your thoughts about how the larger reading helps you address this issue, question or problem (use parenthetical page references)
c. in a final paragraph, sum up what you have learned from engaging the text in this way—for example, what you now think in response to your opening question or problem, or what new questions or issues your analysis has raised for you

c. Spell-check and grammar-check your work. Misspellings, typographical errors and inconsistencies, and referencing problems need to be addressed before you submit your work
d. Direct quotes and paraphrases must be cited appropriately
e. Your assignment should be no less than 500 and no more than 800 words in length (i.e., 2-3 pages)
f. Include a word count at the end of your assignment
g. Your assignment must include at least one direct quote from any of the readings mentioned in the prompt

Ethical Decision Making: What should Mathew Do?
Mathew’s Gold4Us mining company based in Indonesia isn't doing well financially. His managers, based in America, don't understand it. So, his position as a production manager is under threat. The managers want profits, yet the workers' health situation is deteriorating due to the acute typhoid fever in the mining area. Mathew is aware that this situation has led to reduced overall productivity in the company. An ethical decision needs to be made here. Should the company prioritize profits over human health? What is the best ethical choice Mathew and his company can make?
I think for Mathew to save his job and potentially the company, he needs first to lay bare the options available to the managers. One, Mathew's company, can arrange that all employees be vaccinated to help prevent this typhoid fever. However, the drawback of this is the local workers will resist these as they believe in the local healers who claim that “vaccines harm fertility and damage the body (Emily Seranko et al., 2019).” They would instead use palm oil for treatment. Also, it will be an expensive exercise for the company. Second, Mathew's company can relocate to a different country with minimal typhoid fever cases. However, this option would leave thousands of jobless in Indonesia. Further, the company will lose access to the abundant gold mines in Indonesia. A third option would be to continue operating in Indonesia while the workers continue to use the local healer's medicine to treat themselves. Again, the company would keep on losing profits because of low productivity (Emily Seranko et al., 2019). Even worse, lives could be lost because palm oil isn't an effective treatment for typhoid fever.
