Essay Instructions:

Please write a five-paragraph response to the following question.
We have looked at Franz Kafka, Emily Dickinson, and Walt Whitman in this class. These writers are very different from each other, but they are all considered radically original in the sense that their work was unlike anything that came before.
The idea of subjectivity, the writer speaking in an intensely personal way about herself or himself, is important in modern literature. Please discuss the three writers we have seen in terms of their originality. What makes them original? In what ways are they different? In what ways, if any, are they the same? Consider, also, how they compare to you. Do you feel you have anything in common with any or all of them? Which ones? Why?
Please be sure to include quotations from whichever artist(s) you discuss to support your arguments. You do not have to answer every question above, but choose the ones that stimulate your thinking, and use comparisons. Be sure to talk about your own work as well as theirs.
Thank you! Good luck!

What Makes the Authors Original?
Franz Kafka is original in various ways. For instance, the protagonists in his texts were isolated figures faced with bizarre and surrealistic predicaments and unfathomable bureaucracies. Moreover, dreams portray the shade of inexplicable or absurd events where one's surroundings transform and evaporate in the "dream logic." However, the absurdist undercurrent that runs through people's dreams was not an issue for Kafka. As such, Kafka was able to describe the absurd naturally that people could not question how logical it was.
Emily Dickinson is original in that she was known for her countless themes of mortality and death and her eccentric personality (Prahl). Dickinson was a prolific writer, although only a smaller percentage of her poems were published during her time. She was not mostly known when she was alive. However, after her death, the American literary canon considered most of her work.
Walt Whitman was original in various ways. For example, he was a humanist and contributed significantly to the transition between transcendentalism and realism, by integrating the two concepts in his literary works ("About Walt Whitman | Academy Of American Poets"). Whitman is among the prominent poets in the United States Canon. He wrote the Leaves of Grass that was widely read and perceived as a type of American epic in the Dante and Homer traditions. Currently the "Leaves of Grass" is still the most enduring, well-loved, and well-known poetry works of Whitman in the American canon. Furthermore, during the outbreak of civil war in the 1860s, Whitman decided to live a "cleansed" and "purged" life. As a result, he worked as a freelance journalist, and would visit the people affected in hospitals within New York. In 1862, he travelled to Washington DC, to take care for his brother who had suff...
