One of the editing techniques to move the story in Fences is cutting and transition, which brings dynamism and purpose to the story. Troy Maxson does not want his son to play college sports, having failed to play professional baseball partly because of racism. Troy is harsh on Cory and does not show affection for Rose, his wife. The editor prioritized sound and rhythm as part of the frames, and this shift ensures that the editing is not off. However, Fences has few cuts despite being two hours and eighteen minutes, and in the film, there were only a few crosscutting scenes as the story is linear. Montage, pacing, structure, and points of view are integrated into the editing to tell the story in Fences.
Eisenstein’s montage is also used in the film, albeit sparingly, to change scenes from the backyard to other areas. For instance, there is a cut from the children playing on the streets and to the home. The camera and montage also shift from the familiar Troy homestead to a bar and this conveys the passage of time. Eisenstein emphasized rhythmic montage where there is the emphasis on tracking shot and uninterrupted sequence helps achieve continuity. The short shots in the film are juxtaposed to link the scenes with the plot and to evoke emotions.
