In this paper, I will analyze The Tell-Tale Heart, a famous short story by Edgar Allan Poe. It was published in 1843 and revolves around an unnamed man who attempts to convince the audience of his sanity and meanwhile commits a crime. As the story moves on, the narrator hides the dead body under the floorboards but ends up getting his truth revealed. His life changes by the whole and he feels restless and guilty, developing stress and anxiety and resulting in him hearing the thumping sounds which always distract his attention from the day-to-day works. He feels that the sounds he is hearing are of the old man’s beating heart who was targeted by the narrator on a night. The story of The Tell-Tale Heart has a lot to learn from. Most importantly, the way the narrator tries to hide the truth from the world speaks of itself that how arrogant and selfish he is (Couzelis, 2012).
It should be noticed that some stories consist of a single theme or one main idea, while the others focus on two or more themes, all of which contribute to the success of those stories. In The Tell-Tale Heart, Edgar Allan Poe stresses two central themes: madness and guilt. The narrator feels bad when he kills the old man he used to spend his days with. He gets mad at him and murders him (Couzelis, 2012, p. 217). Later on, the situation gets out of control, and the narrator fails to cope with his guilt.
