Poem Analysis
Li Bai was a creative and prolific Chinese poet who talked much about the Chinese culture and traditions in his works. From those so many poems he wrote about Chinese culture, I have selected “In the Mountains on a Summer Day.” This poem was part of his summer poetry series, written in Tang Dynasty China in the 8th century (Woo 2008).
In this poem, Li Bai not only talks about the local culture but also about how summers have been in his native land. He begins this short poem with these two lines: “Gently I stir a white feather fan,” and “With open shirt sitting in a green wood” (Woo 2008). This stanza clarifies that the poet spent many days traveling across the country. During his summer vacations, he saw a tiny bird sitting on the tree, enjoying the brightness and warmth of the sun. Li Bai seems to be making the wise use of his sense of humor and imaginations to describe the beauty of China as well as its excellent culture. According to the poet, people tend to live a simple life in this country and love being in a peaceful, hassle-free environment. At the same time, they are friendly with tourists and show utmost respect to anyone visiting their country. This country receives a significant number of tourists during the summer, and that’s when the culture, traditions and real beauty of China can be seen with their fullest. From one corner of the country to the other, we can see locals enjoying time together and preparing local foods for each other (Woo 2008).
