Culture is dynamic and thus complex. It changes from time to time, and in various ways. Culture is an inherited idea that differentiates a group of people from another. The items that define and differentiate the culture in a particular society include traditions, behaviors, language, and art. Each society has specific elements of culture that make its people unique and different from other citizens. Art is used by a particular group of people to express themselves. Several elements of culture such as morals, traits, and religious beliefs are symbolized through art. Therefore, culture has a significant influence on art. It is true that cultural changes bring about changes in art.
Historically, artworks were produced as a response to prevailing cultural trends and other incidences in society. The impulse of humanity to create artworks is universal. Throughout all stages of civilization and in every part of the world, beliefs and ideas were communicated through art. Therefore, artworks are cultural documents that provide important information about both past and contemporary cultures. They provide critical insights into the past lives and values of others (Meyer, 2010). Regardless of their types, artworks reflect the converging culture, domestic life, history and memory, ceremonies, and cosmology and beliefs, among others.
Analysis of art and artifacts demonstrate historical events and their consequences. They help to envision the past and other possibilities at the time. For example, Trajan’s Column is a monument in Rome built-in 113. It was dedicated to Emperor Trajan, whose ashes were buried in the column’s square base to depict the arms and armor capture from the Dacians on its surface.
