Critic’s Statement of Philosophy. Literature & Language Essay

You are about to enter the job market as an art critic, so it’s time to create your Critic’s Statement of Philosophy. It cannot be more than one (1) page long and should take the format of a formal cover letter. Employers don’t want to read volumes. Get to the point: Who are you? What can you do for our journal, internet site, etc.
First, decide where you want to interview. Decide on the journal, newspaper, Internet forum, magazine, etc. for which you would like to write.
Following are the necessary components of your statement:
1) A brief discussion of your interpretive framework (postmodernist, modernist, feminist, hybrid perspectives, etc.)
2) A clear idea of your purpose/goals as an art critic—What’s the critic’s job? What purpose might a critic serve? What should a critic focus on? What’s your approach to criticism? [covered in Barrett’s text]
3) A clear idea of the nature of the artworks that fall within your area of expertise and interest, including examples of works about which you have written or would like to write
4) A clear idea of the audience with whom you would like to communicate
5) Exhibit a writing style infused with your personality, the authority and enthusiasm of your own voice; writing should be coherent, clear, substantiated, yet compelling.
