How to structure your reflection paper:
 Summarize the podcast you’ve chosen. You should talk briefly about who was interviewed, their background, the topics they’ve covered, and some of the ideas that they have put forward. For Podcast interviews with some personal conversation, try to focus this summary on the communication and research material discussed. COMMPENDIUM REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT COMM 1000 As part of your work for this course, you are required to complete three short reflection papers on three different episodes of your choice of the COMM 1000 podcasts. The podcasts are conducted and produced by Dr. Stephen Stifano, who is a Professor in the Department of Communication at UCONN. The podcast reflections are worth 50 points each (150 points total), representing 15% of your grade. See the course syllabus for complete details and policies about the assignment. For each of the three reflections:  You will write a 2-3 page paper (double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins).  You will submit the paper via HuskyCT. Each podcast will have its own assignment. All papers will be submitted through SafeAssign. The assignment will be due at 11:59 PM seven days after the podcast is posted.  Assignments turned in less than 48 hours-late (from the deadline) have the potential to earn half-credit (the awarded grade divided by two). More effort needed to indicate that the author paid attention to the podcast. 6: Mostly summarizes the podcast, though summary may lack some important details. 8: Summary covers the podcast thoroughly without any major omissions of the important details. 10: Excellent summary of the podcast that is both thorough and wellstructured, making it abundantly clear what occurred in the episode. Writing is unclear in areas, with flaws that make the paper somewhat difficult to read. 3: Paper shows a few grammatical or spelling errors. Summary of Podcast
The current communication podcast is about crisis and risk communication hosted by Steve Stefano and Christine Gilbert. The interviewee is Dr. Ken Lachlan, who is the head of the department and a researcher of crisis and risk in the Department of Communication at the University of Connecticut. According to the podcast, Dr. Ken Lachlan studied business major in his undergraduate in North Carolina. However, he moved from the business sector to become a researcher of crisis and risk communication. Some of the concepts that have been discussed in this podcast include how media is used during disaster, and the interviewee points out that most people have media literacy issues, such as being unable to distinguish fiction from the truth and rumor. A good number of people are also unable to discern reliable sources that provide actionable information. Dr. Ken indicates that Hurricane Katrina is one of the disasters where poor communication resulted in unnecessary fatalities, indicating that the geographical location of Orleans, the region that was highly hit by the disaster, was at a high risk of a hurricane, but this was not communicated to the people prior to the occurrence of the disaster. Poor communication also led to poor distribution of relief items following the disaster. The issue of social media being a good channel to communicate to people about disasters has been also discussed in the podcast where some of its advantages such as being able to disseminate information quickly and over large areas compared to mass media have been highlighted. Another important idea in this video in the collaboration between various scholars such as Geo-engineers, social scientists, and soil scientists to mitigate disaster.
Aspects of Conversation
A conversation is an interactive communication, where one party opens a channel by sending an initial message. For a conversation to ensue, the communicated message establishes a common ground, which must be comprehensible to the participating parties. Communication during a disaster can be started by the affected person to the relevant authority or vice versa.
The second aspect of the conversation is the commitment to engage, where the receiver must pay attention to the message and then commit to engaging with the sender. In some instances, commitment may only entail the receiver of the message paying attention. For a conversation to continue, participating parties must see value to continue the conversation.
