Transportation is one key sector the United States relies upon to compete globally, support, and relieve a slow domestic economy. Additionally, people depend on transport to get to work and other places surrounding their lives. For example, people use transportation to socialize, access hospitals and other areas of interest. Although the current extensive transportation system seems adequate to accommodate today’s population and economy, research suggests that more needs to be done to accommodate the rising population. Nevertheless, preservation and development are vital for supporting the expected 20 percent increase in population. Unfortunately, the acrimonious discussion concerning shortfalls and taxes prevents the federal government from addressing the investment needed to enhance the transportation system’s performance.
Besides, transportation systems function at different capacities for definite day periods. Unforeseen effects, such as harsh and extreme weather, can interrupt traffic, increase congestion, and procrastination. Drivers and motor transporters on metropolitan area highways and travelers on intercity planes, buses, and trains experience obstacles emanating from the stalling of the system’s expansion. Nevertheless, these interruptions continue to occur despite the constant increase in population and the economy. Research illustrates that the critical performance problem across modes stems from inadequate training on natural, human-made disasters and severe weather events, which may become more predominant with climate change.
