In the state of Ohio, only Licenced Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs or PCCs) are allowed to diagnose and treat mental disorders. The licence is granted based on graduate education, (supervised and unsupervised) clinical experience and a multi-step examination process. Candidates typically begin as a counsellor trainee, a clinical resident or a Licensed Professional Counsellor.
Additional certifications for mental health professionals may also be obtained from the following:
* National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) which ensures that the counselor has met the national standards required to practice the profession.
* Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) which provides information on how to become a certified behavior analyst
* Specialty certifications for those who want to focus on choice/reality therapy, Gestalt theory, and as wel as eating disorders.
* Individuals who want to gain credential for administering Myers-Briggs Type Indicator can become Master Practitioners.
* The National Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists (NACBT) gives information on how to gain four different kinds of certifications: Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist (CCBT), Diplomat in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (DCBT), Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Group Therapist (CBGT), Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Group Facilitator (CBGF)
* The Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Institute provides information and seminars that utilize EMDR for treating stress due to trauma.
* The Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) has provisions on how counselors can become certified art therapists or art therapy supervisors.
* The Association for Play Therapy - The Association for Play Therapy stipulates the requirements for clinical mental health practitioners who want to become accredite play therapists.
* For counselors who perform grief counseling, stress management, crisis intervention, spiritual counseling, health care life coaching, meditation instructing and, pastoral thanatology, the American Institute of Health Care Professionals (AIHCP) now offers various certifications.
