Education is indeed important and every person should strive to be educated. However, the level of education one decides to reach should solely be dependent on one’s preferences. The notion that every student needs to go to college or strive to at least make the cut is flawed. Getting admitted to college is indeed helpful especially to students who have already settled on their preferred career paths. However, there are students who despite being smart dislike the notion of joining college. While the above does not justify the notion that college is not for everyone, it helps to show that parents and teachers often miss the point and force students into commitments that they are unwilling to honor. Teachers should always strive to prepare students as if they are going to college, however, students should always be afforded the option of pursuing other dreams and goals in life. The choice must and should always rest with the student. However, this is not to say that teachers and parents should not be involved in the decision-making process but they should be okay if students choose paths that are against their wish. Education empowers, however, it should not be geared towards producing students who believe that college is a rite of passage and a mandatory level if success is to be achieved.
