Developing cultural competence is a process that develops and evolves over time from cultural sensitivity to cultural awareness/understanding to cultural competence.

There may be healthcare implications as far as the nutritional value mothers receive during this time. It will be important to educate the mother as to how many bowls of soup or cups of tea would be appropriate to maintain nutritional health and encourage the addition of varied foods/vegetables in the soup. Also assisting by warming drinks or foods would also be a considerate gesture.

Understanding Chinese Americans' health and nutrition-related beliefs play an important role in determining the kind of care they receive from nurses. The nurses ought to be culturally sensitive, thus making it easy for them to understand Chinese beliefs. As a result, they would be culturally competent to the extent of providing quality healthcare to Chinese Americans. The paper will outline the various health and nutrition-related beliefs of Chinese Americans and the associated healthcare implications. It will also analyze the nurses' interventions to provide quality healthcare.
Chinese Americans believe that the imbalance of cold and hot foods in the body can cause illness. As a result, a patient might refuse to take a particular food due to its associated belief in illnesses. The Chinese also believe that some foods can be used to cure certain illnesses. Hence, when a patient falls sick, they eat such foods to get well (Liou & Bauer, 2007). The associated healthcare implication is that the foods believed to cause illnesses might be of nutritional importance to the patient. Therefore, the nurse should convince the patient to eat the foods of nutritional value to their bodies. Given Chinese Americans' strong cultural beliefs, it might be challenging to convince the patient to take such foods. Alternatively, the nurse can educate the patient on the role played by a balanced diet in recovery. If the patient is made aware of the food that might fasten the recovery process, the chances are high that they would accept to take it.
