Objective 1: Caring and Holism in Nursing Practice
Holistic care in nursing is a comprehensive model of caring and I consider it as a fundamental element in the field of nursing. In my point of view, it is the ability to recognize an individual as a whole and to acknowledge his/ her interdependence of biological, spiritual, social and psychological aspects.
To provide holistic care I will consider all aspects of the patients including their emotions, cultural values, beliefs and lifestyle and their impact on the treatment process. My aim is to educate patients about self-care and facilitate them in performing their daily tasks independently. As a care taker, I respect the role of the patients in their treatment process and encourage self-care, which is also a major aspect of holistic care.
Through holistic care, patient’s self-confidence can be boosted and this approach had allowed me to better understand the impact of an illness on the patient’s entire life and his/ her needs. Furthermore, it helps me in improving harmony between spirit, body, mind and emotions in a continuously changing environment.
Objective 2: Communicate Effectively With Clients, Families, Staff and Peers
I strongly believe that excellent communication skills can make a nurse successful. As a nurse effective communication helps me to connect with patients and health care professionals. My ability to communicate efficiently facilitates me in building relationships, prevent medical errors and improve patients’ satisfaction.
I use therapeutic communication techniques which assist me in providing healthcare services to my patients. It includes active and attentive listening with focus on both verbal and nonverbal communications. At the same time, I also take into consideration the cultural barriers while communicating with my patients, for instance some patients may view eye contact as culturally acceptable, while others may consider it as offensive.
Also, age and development level of patients are important factors in communication. For example, while treating a preschool child with limited vocabulary, I use simple language for verbal messages according to their understanding level.
