MUS 109: Rock Music Instructor: Taylor Ackley Listening Guide 1 Instructions: Write a 2-3 page paper on a rock song recorded before 1970. Songs: You may pick any song that is NOT: • On the list of required listening for the course, or • Discussed in depth in the reading (if you are unsure whether your song meets this requirement, ask me.) How to choose a song: • A good way to do this is to pick a song from the course listening that you particularly liked, then listen to other songs by that artist until you find one you’d like to write about. There are plenty of good songs out there recorded before 1970! Before starting the assignment: • Watch the 3-part Music Basics video lecture series, located in the Supplementary Material for classes 1, 2, and 3. • Carefully study the listening guides on p. 22-28, 52, 57, 62-63 of the textbook. Make sure you understand exactly what the authors are talking about. Study the vocab words in bold—they are repeated in glossary of the textbook (p. 379-382). • Review the Example Listening Guide posted on Blackboard in Week 2: Assessments. This should give you a sense of how to make your listening chart. (I used the “table” function in Microsoft Word.) What to write about: • You must make a listening chart modeled after the example assignment (which itself is modeled after the listening charts in the textbook) • In addition to the listening chart, you must write between 400-700 words about the song, addressing the following aspects of the music: o Form o Rhythm o Arrangement, instrumentation o Vocal style o Melody and chords o Lyrics o Timbre o Anything else that seems relevant (i.e. use of recording studio, etc.) Refer to the textbook’s glossary (p. 379-382) and to the short “Music Basics” video lectures (in the Week 1 Supplementary Material) for terminology to use when discussing aspects of the music. Please express your observations using these terms. MUS 109: Rock Music Instructor: Taylor Ackley What not to write about: • Do NOT list facts about the song or the band/performer, i.e. “[Song X] was the Billboard #1 for three weeks,” or “[Album X] was the band’s best-selling album.” This paper is about your own observations of the music itself. It is not a history paper. I have made a bunch of observations about the song. How do I tie them all together? The best papers will say something about the “big picture” of music. In your effort to decide what aspects of the music to discuss, first try to articulate what the song is about; what mood does it attempt to create? Does it suggest a certain type of engagement on the part of the listener? Once you have answered this question, try to pinpoint specific aspects of the music that help create this mood or effect. Always try to relate your specific observations to the overall “feel” of the song. Additionally, feel free to talk about how your song is similar to or different from previous songs or styles we have studied. Does the song reflect aspects of previous styles? Think about this question in terms of any and all aspects of the music, including (but not limited to) form. You are also encouraged to compare and contrast your song with another song by the same artist or by contemporaries of the artist if you feel that such a comparison would be illuminating. You must do this! No quotation marks for a direct quote = plagiarism, even if you cite the page number! § Also, notice that I introduced the quote instead of merely dropping it into my paper. This means I am including the quote to highlight a particular perspective on an issue. I am not simply using the quote to substitute for my own words. This does not count as putting the authors’ ideas into your own words! Introduction
Music is always entertaining if it suits the needs of the listeners. No music can impact the listeners if imperfectly composed since people are more enthusiastic about entertainment rather than merely listening to a song. Much as music is majorly based on the use of spoken words to produce something that is artistical, numerous elements (instruments) need to be incorporated in the system so that music becomes artistic. Being the previous experienced gospel and R &B musician, Ray Charles composed an exciting song that attracted the attention of everyone. The song contains various elements that make it distinctive from other songs. Some of these musical elements include the form, rhythm, the arrangement or the instrumentation, vocal style, melody and cords, lyrical segments, timbre, and many other things that make the song attractive. The Form
In the music, form entails the organization or the structure of the artistic content. These forms may be illustrated by a material such as phrases that show the musical idea, although other elements need to bolster this element to make the song more interesting. With the development of musical ideas, the form is increasingly becoming significant in the music industry. Regarding the song "I Can't Stop Loving You," the form in the song makes it impressive. The song introduces how the composer feels for his girlfriend when he could not persistently live with in the same vicinity. As such, the structure in the song makes it easier for one to quickly identify the facts or the idea enshrined in the song.
Rhythm
As indicated above, the form alone cannot make the music very interesting as people may expect. Rhythm is also essential in the music organization. Literally, rhythm is an element that certifies a smooth flow of the music to the listeners’ ears. The significant components of rhythm are the sounds and silences, which are integrated to form patterns of sound; hence, rhythm. To make it more interesting, the rhythm is composed of some steady beats that attract the attention of the listener to the song. In the same way, “I Can’t Stop Loving Lou” is made up of some smooth flowing rhythm that makes the song very interesting. Therefore, to suit the music market, Charles, in his song, I can’t stop loving you considered the rhythm as an essential element in music.
Lyrical Segment
The song is composed of the loving messages in the lyrical bits. For instance, the lyric states that “I can’t stop wanting you; it’s useless to say, so I’ll just live my life of dreams of yesterday those happy hours that we once knew” (Charles, n. d). Such a message indicates that the composer of the song was in the immediate need of his lovely girlfriend. He misses the wife to the extent he audibly states that I can’t stop loving you. The smooth tone in the song helps indicate that the music has some enjoyable flow that impresses the composer.
