As Macfarlane put it clear, touch is a reciprocal action, a gesture of exchange with the world. The author further clarify that to make an impression is also to receive one. These are all spontaneous rhythmical action in human life. Walking barefoot was initially a fashion. Even though the fashion is fading, the fusionists are gradual reviving the old ways. In the two chapters; snow and Pear, Macfarlane is deeply interested in contact with the landscape with feet shod. Regarding this, the essay herein will explore the how these experiences may contribute to unifying or distinct cultural expressions.
Macfarlane stated that not all barefoot walks were pleasurable. Trying to cross a heat-baked ploughed field, with its rows of sun-hardened sillion, was like walking over a sea of swords. This is a distinct cultural expression on how disgusting is the experience. Culturally, no one would ever wish to persevere and endure such distasteful feelings and experiences. It is painful to walk through a sea of swords. This is an experience preserved for a few heroes and heroine echoed in the society. It takes courage, audacity, and efforts to endure walking barefoot in the rough cultivated soil. The author further stated that going on with unshod journey was like trying to stroll across hedgehog backs. The thorny skin of hedgehog would not tolerate anyone to move smoothly without pain and immense regret. This example shows a distinct cultural expression about walking barefoot.
