Context is Everything by Jason Purnell
Jason Purnell, a health psychologist, makes it clear that health disparity in the United States of America (USA) is a significant problem. In particular, it was one of the primary reasons why he decided to pursue a public health career. Purnell’s work is helping individuals to lead healthy lives, particularly in their wider social contexts (Purnell, 2019). He realized that more black women and men were dying in the USA due to cancer than any other demographic. For this reason, the only way he would have eradicated that problem is by studying public health to come up with effective ways to promote the well-being of minorities. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) refers to health disparities as the prevalence, mortality, and incidence differences that are related to adverse health problems in a particular population.
Through projects such as “For the Sake of All,” Purnell explores factors that can affect individuals’ health beyond medical care. For instance, some of the things that affect the well-being of black people are limited educational and economic opportunities. The individual raises public awareness about the social determinants of public health. Specifically, reducing health disparities in a particular community is not as straightforward as it might appear. For example, Purnell found out that 40% of early deaths are caused by social conditions, such as community connectedness, education, and housing (Purnell, 2019). The psychologist’s three-pronged approach addresses three primary goals. First, it informs people about how social determinants, such as economic and education statuses, can contribute to disparities in health. Second, Purnell shares effective strategies that can be implemented to eliminate health inequalities. Third, he recommends programs and policies that can improve the health of African Americans in St. Louis.
