Early filmmakers, including Smith Melies, are a significant component of film history. Such films are what Gunning refers to as Melies Films. As addressed by Gunning, cinema of attraction is cinema based on the quality celebrated by Leger, that is, the ability to display something. Cinemas of attraction display a willingness to rapture a fictional world for an opportunity to implore the audience’s attention. Gunning contrasts this to the voyeuristic aspect characteristic of narrative cinema that Christian Metz analyzed; it is an exhibitionist cinema. Exhibitionism is a feature of erotic films that played a significant role in the production of early cinema. Cinema of attraction is characterized by actors recurringly looking at cameras, such as comedians smirking at cameras.
