Democracy in Africa
The state of democracy in Africa has no particular direction. Democracy in Africa has become a dangerous experiment that the results are always wrong for the nations practicing it. Where do African nations mess up in democracy? Politicians, media pundits, students, and researchers have all given different answers to this question. Is Africa becoming more or less democratic? The majority have no satisfactory answers to the state of democracy in Africa. Gyimah-Boadi and Magaisa discuss the state of democracy in Africa and to where some of the nations go wrong.
Gyimah-Boadi illustrates the state of democracy using his “Afrobarometer” research. From his study across Africa, he finds out that the majority of the people still prefer the democratic way of electing their leaders. About 70 percent of the population across Africa prefer democracy, “Over time, popular support for democratic governance has endured and even grown. Across twenty countries surveyed since 2008, support for democracy has remained at about 70 percent, with three-quarters or more of respondents endorsing regular, open, and honest elections”(Gyimah-Boadi,2019). About 69-73 percent suggest a limit for presidential terms. Even though the majority of people across Africa prefer democracy, they urge their political leaders to abide by the law.
This indicates the high demand for democracy in Africa by the people. This high demand has to be met by a supply of good leadership. The leaders elected in democracy has failed most of the nations by unethical governance. Most leaders elected do not abide by the law. Instead, they manipulate the law to meet their selfish and mostly greedy interests. Gyimah-Boadi (2019) refers to leadership as the main supply of democracy. He uses various examples of leaders who have directly failed their trustful citizens. He uses DRC as the latest example in which the elected and sworn in president, contrary to the majority who had elected the other losing candidate. He uses another example in Zambia, where the current president is harassing the opposition and planning to go for a third term contrary to the constitution.
He goes further to give another example in Tanzania where the sitting president John Pombe Magufuli has clamped on the opposition, frozen media freedom, and introduced restrictions on the civil society.
