I believe in the power of the people. The ability to choose leaders through free and fair elections defines this power and is the main reason why I am a democrat. A democracy focuses on the rights and freedoms of its citizens before making any decisions that may affect them either positively or negatively. I believe in transparency and the citizen’s responsibility to be informed about what is on with the government.
In my opinion, rights and freedoms are the most important attributes needed to effectively run a country. By exercising the right to speak freely, to practice whatever religion we want and to engage in social and political activities freely, citizens feel that they also play a part in the development of the country. Another reason why I’m a democrat is that I believe the government I vote for exists to serve the people. The government’s responsibility can be easily achieved through civic participation by citizens of the country. I support civic participation which involves, serving on juries, voluntary military service and other obligations that apply to a democracy.
I also believe in the power of the citizens to organize and make a case for change in situations where they are unhappy with the government. By being a democrat, exercising the power to vote incompetent leaders out of office keeps malpractice and corruption in the government at bay.
