What is Audism?
Over the years, deaf people have been substantially represented in modern culture. However, few gaps exist in how the general population understands what it means to be deaf. Therefore, deaf people continue to experience open discrimination every day. The act of discriminating against deaf people is referred to as audism. It is the belief that a person with the ability to hear is superior to a deaf person (Wilson & Atcherson, 2017). The person exercises authority over a deaf person, dominates them, and restructures their way of thought and action. In the video titled, 'Sometimes You Are The Caterpillar,' the caterpillar thinks that because he can crawl under the fence, the snail should also have the same ability. He persistently urges him to keep trying, even when it is clear that the snail's shell cannot allow him to (Chescaleigh, 2015). Such is a perfect demonstration of audism.
Examples of Audism
In the video titled, 'Listen to Others' by Christopher Rawlings, several examples of audism have been listed. One of the examples that stood out was the denial and restriction of opportunities. Most employers look for people who can get tasks done fast and in a coherent manner as they would like. Chances for deaf people to work in such environments are therefore slim and almost impossible to attain. Sometimes deaf people can make the most impact in the work environment when they are given access to the needs they may have. Christopher Rawlings emphasizes the need to listen to their needs and provide for them (Simmons, 2018). Another example of audism is verbal abuse and patronizing behavior. Here, people with audism behavior against the deaf make verbal utterances that are meant to demean them. These utterances are often sarcastic and full of spite. They may include fake compliments on how the deaf person speaks.
