The technical working principle of VHF Datalink and ADS-B
It is common for pilots to wait for some minutes for their clearance to be permitted. During peak travel periods, when a single channel is used for air traffic control, communication delays are likely to occur. Aviation experts recommend the use of a faster-abbreviated speech to control air traffic (Sahawneh et al., 2015). Commonly, the voice channels are busy restricting pilots from reading the clearance information causing misunderstanding and route conformance errors.
For several years, air traffic control systems rely on pilots to provide them with weather updates and other important data. Such limitations have been overcome by the introduction of aircraft communication addressing and reporting system (ACARS) which helps in transmitting information from the air to the ground using advanced radio data systems (Schnell et al., 2014). Two of the common systems include a VHF digital link and the AD-B systems. The main purpose of Aircraft Communication Addressing And Reporting System (ACARS) is to provide VHF data link to limit air traffic complexities and general flight operation using advanced operational controls (Sahawneh et al., 2015).
The difference between VHF datalink and ADS-B
The VHF data link is one of the earliest air traffic control systems used as a process of sending information between aircraft and ground stations. The VHF datalink was intended to extend information exchange passage across the world. VHF digital data system revolutionized information sharing minimizing communication errors within aviation sector (Zambrano, Yeste & Landry, 2014).
Datalink provides several benefits including operational efficiency, safety and improved capacity of communication services. Compared to VHF-data link, ADS-B is the latest invention used to manage air traffic. The ADS-B will soon replace radar systems used in air traffic control. The difference between VHF-Data link and ADS-B is that ADS-B does not rely on a centralized system to manage air traffic data. Instead, the system uses a self-report from the GPS position. The GPS connects communication devices, enabling pilots to see the entire air traffic (Sahawneh et al., 2015).
