Serving in the military requires a great level of commitment and the desire to serve. However, serving in the army is also a rewarding process as the service men gain a lot of experience in handling different challenges and quick decision making. A number of military veterans have proven to be great strategic leaders both in business and in politics. These leaders learn the art of accountability during their tenure in the army. They learn several leadership aspects including responsibilities, principles and standards, standards of service, and several other accountability issues in the army (US Department of Defense, 2015). This review is necessary as it provides insights on how the military practice accountability and how this practice makes them better leaders.
Accountability in the military is a prioritized value with appropriate resources to ensure that the personnel observe accountability in all their undertakings. In this context, there is an Electronic Military Personnel Office (eMILPO) database, which is accessible by all members belonging to different ranks through a World Wide Web. This system offers the Army personnel a reliable and efficient mechanism to perform their actions and manage their strength accountability. Some special ranks of forces also use this system to perform specific duties, such as in the preparation and execution of DD Form 93, which refers to emergency data. The database is also useful to the ARNG in a deployed environment as well as in managing HR tasks for the Regular Army counterparts.
Accountability in the military is also managed through the Deployed Theater Accountability System, which offers land force commanders a mechanism to track and report the duty status of all deployed personnel based on their name, unit location, and date. The system collects, processes, and displays the personnel accounting information to facilitate smooth operation of the military personnel. These systems help the military leaders to understand themselves and their abilities, needs, and challenges. If one does not understand themselves, it is impossible to understand others (St. Bonaventure University, 2019). Similarly, if a person cannot supervise whatever they do, it is impossible for the individual to supervise others.
