Abuses of children during the Victorian time
One of the England novelists and a social commentator of England, Charles Dickens used both journalism and fictional literature to expose and condemn the societal and ethical nature in the Victorian England. He aspired to reflect the inequalities, presenting memorable and exciting plots to expose moral injustices (Blake, 2016).Charles Dickens attacked some of the specific abuses towards children during the Victorian era caused by the industrial revolution. The hierarchical structure comprised of the upper class, the middle class and the working class presented negative effects more so to children (Carroll & Wheeler, 2014). These distinctive social classes resulted to inequalities in authority, wealth, education, culture and the general working and living conditions affecting children (Dickens, 2016).
Due to poverty, children were forced into labor, working as chimney sweepers. The children crawled up the chimneys to clean out while some boys were rat catchers (Dickens, 2016). Some children acted as messengers who were quite common for among the upper class who used street urchins who were mostly children to run errands (Dickens, 2016). Charles Dickens in his novel in the Bleak House depicts Jo, a street urchin who is asked by Lady Dedlock to gather information concerning Nemo (Dickens, 2016). Children also worked in mud larks that meant that they could venture in the Thames River to scrounge for coal, rope, bones risking their lives as they worked bare feet (Dickens, 2016).
During the Victorian England, the working class was alienated from other class as their children had no room for imagination, this is evident in one of Charles Dickens novel hard times where Thomas Grand grind's beliefs on education as about life itself (Dickens, 2016).
