Trauma among Americans

Institutional Affiliation
Trauma, also known as psychological trauma, is damage to the human brain that occurs as a result of one or more distressing events. It accompanies a lot of stress, depression, and anxiety and can lead to various emotional and behavioral changes. In different parts of the United States, a significant number of people suffer from trauma (Kessler, 2018). The problem gets developed in both children and adults. It is believed that trauma is more common in children below 18 and women than in men, and it takes days, weeks, years or even decades to get fully develop and to cause other negative consequences.
Trauma basically differs from one individual to another. According to their subjective experiences, different people react to similar traumatic events differently. In simple words, it can be said that not all Americans who experience a potentially traumatic event actually become psychologically traumatized. Some of them may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after being exposed to a traumatic event, while others may not develop this illness. This discrepancy in risk rate is attributed to protective factors some Americans have that allow them to cope with trauma. The major protective factors are environmental factors and temperamental factors.
If people are provided with a safe, secure, friendly, hygienic, protective and productive environment and are allowed to live peacefully, they will hardly develop trauma. On the other hand, if they are not provided with a good environment, they are likely to experience different problems or a major disaster that could cause trauma and other psychological issues. For example, in different parts of the United States, various African Americans and people belonging to other minority groups are not provided with the best facilities and comforts of life. They are left alone and are often kept from accessing the things they need for their survival. An idea of this can be taken from the fact that various African Americans are given tough times by the white Americans. Sometimes, they are not allowed to send their children to the schools, colleges, and universities where white pupils are studying; sometimes, they are not given well-paying jobs and are directly or indirectly forced to remain underpaid. This eventually leads them to develop different psychological problems, including trauma.
On the other hand, the four main temperamental factors are sanguine, choleric, melancholic and phlegmatic (Duarte, 2015). Sanguine include social, active and enthusiastic people who go through one or more unwanted events develop trauma. Choleri...
