A building layout is a presentation of the foundational plan of a building structure on the ground surface. It shows where walls, pillars, and structural separations are located within a building structure. A building layout informs excavation activities in exact positions and orientations based on the building or structure design. Therefore, a layout survey is an important stage in the construction of any building. The establishment of building layouts is enhanced by the application survey tools, including level and laser plummet. The current paper is a report on the application of the tools for building layout purposes.
Components and Functionality
A surveyor’s level is an instrument used to measure the heights of distance points using a single point as the datum. In terms of height above sea level, the datum’s height is accurately known before beginning the leveling process. The equipment consists of a telescope fitted with a spirit level and tripod. The tripod holds the instrument giving it stability above the datum. The telescope’s function is to focus on the point of interest and determine its height based on a reflector or bar-coded staff (Elhassan & Ali, 2013). The spirit level fitted on the telescope is used to ensure the proper placement of the tripods so that the instrument is parallel with the ground surfaces where the height above sea level is known. In building layout, levels are used to determine whether excavations or the addition of excavated material are required to establish the required building layout as outlined in the building blueprint document. The blueprint document provides information on measurements, size, shape, and structure of different aspects of the building.
The building layout represents tall structures like story buildings. Uniformity is the foundation level, and vertical alignment of structures is essential for stability. In construction, laser plummets are used to transfer reference points (Ćmielewski et al., 2011). It is an optical device that projects a monochromatic, coherent beam of infrared radiation or light vertically, and its purpose is to align points vertically. In story building, for instance, once the building layout is determined using a surveyor’s level as highlighted earlier, these points are transferred to upper floors to ensure a vertical alignment necessary for the stability of the building.
