Choosing a Topic
Your presentation and paper should explain a set of related facts and ideas in a way that is both interesting and understandable to your audience. Remember, your job here is to teach us all something. Assume that your audience knows little to nothing about your topic and it is your job to explain it to us in a clear and logical sequence. You may also want to include in your presentation some discussion of the civic or personal dimensions of your topic. In other words, how does your topic impact or involve human society in political, economic, medical, religious, moral, or cultural ways, or why is the topic important to you? Another good way to approach building a talk is to begin with a question, and then use your talk to answer that question. You should choose a topic that interests you. Try to avoid broad topics in favor of narrow, more focused topics. "Coral Reefs" is an interesting topic, but much too broad to discuss in a short presentation. A better topic would be "Coral Reefs of the Bahamas" or "Threats to Coral Reefs". Another good approach is to find an article in the news or online and report on that, using additional sources to help explain the content and significance of the article. For example, "Viruses May Be Causing Coral Bleaching and Decline Around the World", ScienceDaily (July 12, 2012) would be a good basis for a talk and paper on threats to coral reefs.
Written Report
You must also hand in a written report, based on your oral presentation, in fulfillment of the writing requirement for distribution courses at Hofstra. You should research your topics carefully, compile facts and ideas, and derive some real information to transfer to your student colleagues. Coral reefs are dying around the world mostly as a result of human activities. Climate change is the main threat to the survival of the corals, therefore, as climate change worsens, it is being predicted that approximately 70-90% of the world’s coral reefs will likely disappear by the end of the century. This is a scary projection since the importance of coral reefs on marine life is documented. However, the estimation does not seem far from considering that it is estimated that almost half of the world’s coral reefs have been destroyed in the past 30 years. One is therefore left to wonder why the situation has been allowed to reach such heights, to the point where all hope seems lost. Just like climate change, people seem uneducated or purposely ignorant of the fact that the world that offers food and shelter is slowly dying. Coral reefs are a source of major benefits to humans also therefore their death will impact communities the same was as marine life. For instance, fish is food for almost half a billion people around the world. The coral reefs are responsible for housing almost 4000 species of fish and it is estimated that 15 tonnes of fish per square kilometer can be produced each year by healthy reefs. Coral reefs like other marine living organism require clean water to survive. However, rampant water pollution, from land-based activities is causing the coral reefs to die at a much higher rate. Pollutants include nutrients, pathogens, sedimentation, toxic chemicals, and waste materials. Sedimentation from agriculture, forestry, marine development acts as the catalyst for the other forms of pollution to occur because the sediments are the ones ultimately responsible for the interference in the coral’s ability to feed, grow, and reproduce. Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous can find their way to the ocean from agricultural fields. One would think that since the nutrients play a huge role in the growth of planktons, they would have a positive effect on coral reefs. However, they cause more harm than good. Coral reefs thrive under low nutrient levels therefore an increase in nutrients will cause the growth of algae which block the sunlight and compete for the needed oxygen. Pathogens and microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi can also grow as a result of increased nutrient levels which in turn increase the possibility of disease outbreaks that are lethal to the corals. Toxic chemicals from industrial waste and agriculture such as mercury lead, and dioxin tamper with the reproduction and defense abilities of the corals. Trash and plastics, on the other hand, entangle the corals, blocking their ability to access oxygen, digestive systems and also releasing toxins of their own.
