Adolescent Diversion Project (Michigan State University)
One of the crime intervention programs which have had much impact on the target group was started in the Michigan state university. The program is referred to as adolescent diversion project. It is a program that is strengths-based and one of the main goals is to divert youths who have been arrested before and provides them with community based services(Crimesolutions.gov, 2015).It is also a program that prevents future acts of crime and delinquency by strengthening the attachment of the youths to their families and prosocial individuals(Crimesolutions.gov, 2015). The program also increases the level of access that the youths have to the community services and protects them from stigmatization as they try to reform from their ways instead of joining gangs.
In terms of delivery system, the program is run under the Psychology Department at the university. Undergraduate students from the university are trained on the program for two semesters, relative to diversion and community based monitoring(Crimesolutions.gov, 2015).In reference to the curriculum, the students spend around 6-8 hours per week with students in the community, school and home setting.The juveniles are taught on skills related to forming and maintaining healthy family relations, employment, school issues and what to do in their free time. The program is mainly targeted at the young offenders between the ages of 13 and 15 years, who have been arrested in due to their crime involvement or crime related habits within the community, some of which relates to gangs.
