Hotspot refers to an area on the crust of the earth with plumes of basaltic magma that create a volcanic activity (Strahler & Strahler, 2006). When the plumes occur below the moving oceanic crust plates, a chain of seamounts and islands are created. A region deep in the earth’s mantle feeds the hotspot with heat generated through convection. This heat melts the rock at the bottom of lithosphere where the mantle’s upper portion aligns with the earth’s crust. It is the melted rocks (magma) that pushes through the crust’s cracks resulting in the formation of volcanoes.
