Social, Political, and Organizational Behavior Influencing Change in Criminal Justice Agencies
Change in the criminal justice system is influenced by social, political, and organizational behavior. the social factors include the changes taking place in society, including attitudes towards the criminal justice systems and civil rights movements. For example, the Black Rights Matter (BLM), which kickstarted nationwide anti-racist protests has led to massive changes in law enforcement. Public apologies are now made and officers are prosecuted for actions that contravene the law. Additionally, police departments are being defunded or facing budget cuts and other changes are being implemented to improve the image of law enforcement (Somvichian-Clausen, 2020). Political behaviors also affect change in criminal justice agencies. The rationale is that the laws made by policymakers dictate the development of criminal justice agencies, especially law enforcement. The politics of evidence involve the push towards embracing scientific evidence in handling crime. These politics have caused massive changes in criminal justice agencies, including the use of body cameras by law enforcement and the admission of scientific evidence in the courts (Henne et al., 2021). Therefore, national and state politics affect such issues as practices, statutes, and procedures followed in the criminal justice system.
Lastly, organizational behavior also influences changes in criminal justice. For instance, poor management and performance can be destructive to a criminal justice agency. A decline in discipline levels among police officers causes law enforcement to make wrong decisions and break the law. Organizational culture is critical in influencing organizational behavior. for example, an agency that is transparent and accountable will be responsible and will answer to society.
Relationship between Organizational Behavior and Organizational Systems
There is a close relationship between organizational behavior and organizational systems in that they have a mutual impact on each other. Changes in organizational behavior trigger changes in the organizational systems. As illustrated above, a change in culture changes practices and procedures, which are the core components of organizational systems. By definition, organizational systems comprise the resources arranged to enable individuals or computational agents to interact with them. For instance, a mail system, command center, or communication infrastructure. The components of an organizational system include the processes, structure and corporate culture, individuals and their roles, and the social and political environment. Changes in any of these components change the behaviors of the individuals. A good example is the BLM movement given above, which represents a change in the social environment (Somvichian-Clausen, 2020). This change has forced law enforcement officers to change their racist tendencies. A change in these behaviors can cause the culture of the police departments to change, which shows the intertwined relationship between organizational behavior and organizational systems.
