Mediation can be defined as a structured and dynamic process in which a neutral third party takes the responsibility of resolving the conflict between two parties via negotiation techniques and specialized communication (Learned et al. 2003). There are seven phases of the process of IEP (individualized educational Plan) for students with disabilities in California. The first phase is the pre-referral phase in which varying interventions are taken care of. The second phase is the referral phase in which students are referred to special education providers. The third phase is the identification phase in which a special assessment is done. The fourth phase is the eligibility phase in which information is collected and used to categorize students who have a disability and are eligible for special education services. In the fifth phase, development of the IEP is done. The sixth phase is the implementation phase, and the seventh phase consists of evaluation and review.
A resolution session is a way of encouraging schools and parents to work out their differences (Janosik & Riehl, 2000). This session is an essential meeting that happens at the beginning of a semester. It is different from mediation as this session strictly consists of a face-to-face meeting.
