Introduction
In 2003, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) was transferred to the Department of Justice (Gilbert, 2018).
In addition to tax and trade offenses, the BATFE used to be in charge of other crimes. Even though the BATFE was transferred to the Department of Justice, the Treasury Department retained BATFE responsibilities.
A BATFE predecessor agency played a significant role in the federal government’s efforts to prevent the commercial sale of alcoholic beverages due to the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1909 and signed into law.
