Role of Department of Defense in Homeland Security
The U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM), established in 2002, is tasked with the control and command of the Department of Defence (DOD), particularly in protecting the homeland and supporting civil authorities to achieve absolute security within the united states (U.S. Northern Command, n.d.). In addition, the USNORTHCOM is responsible for ensuring the freedom of action and protection of the people of America as well as the national powers bestowed on to the state. Some of the duties undertaken by the US NORTHCOM include disaster recovery missions in times of natural disasters and terrorist attacks, drug trafficking mitigation, and mitigation of any other threat as ordered by the DOD.
