Gentrification is the process through which the character of a neighborhood is changed through the influx of wealthier people, which attracts new businesses (Andersson, 2011). This essay will discuss the pros and cons of gentrification, its effects on crime, and how it affects the lives of low-income residents of particular neighborhoods.
From the case study and PowerPoints, gentrification can be presented to the public as a way of making neighborhoods safer and improving the lives of people residing in a targeted neighborhood. However, this assumption is not necessarily true. Gentrification leads to an increase in property prices, forcing out the neighborhood's original residents in a variety of ways (Ogilvie, 2019). High rent rates, increased costs of living, and the development of new affluent businesses in the neighborhood, which more often leads to the closure of existing businesses, force low-income individuals to move out of the neighborhoods (Ceccato & Lukyte, 2011). Gentrification also leads to the social exclusion of the low-income residents by the new wealthier occupants, leading to reduced cultural identity and social cohesion of the low-income occupants (Curran, 2016).
