Abuse of Inmates
Inmates are abused mentally, verbally, physically, sexually, and emotionally. The officers abusing inmates do it naturally, considering the inmates fear that the claim of any abuse may not be recognized. The predicted or expected outcome is the officer's harsh response. They can even engage fellow inmates to execute unlawful actions. While the appointed inmates may not be willing to harm their fellow prisoners, they must obey the officer's commands. Instead, they should meet their expectations regarding all assigned tasks despite their fellow inmates (Vogel et al., 2020).
Consequently, the issue is overlooked because the actions are not brought into the open, and it is barely impossible for justice to prevail. According to Vogel et al. (2020), inmates' use is a prevalent issue, and it violates the Code of Ethics (1994). The case has severe consequences like death, suicide, and rape in correctional settings.
Correctional Staff Misconduct
The ethical issues in correctional settings include the offenders incarcerated for committing crimes and the staff hired to control and protect the inmates. Correctional staff misconduct is a significant ethical issue in the settings. Its prevalence has raised national concern within the disciplinary system (Modvig, 2014). Although the problem is hard to observe with little or no knowledge of its origin and modifiability, it exists with a rising occurrence rate. The officers' misconduct is observed through violence, negligence of inmates, breach of responsibilities, favoritism, and the failure to follow and uphold the held position's duties at work (Modvig, 2014). Also, correctional staff misconduct is evidenced in their behaviors. Modvig (2014) claims that any trait dehumanizing, degrading, or abusive to the offended individuals reveals the ethical issue.
Effects of Ignoring Proper Boundaries in these Situations
Ignoring proper boundaries in these ethical issues in correctional settings is harmful in various ways. The victimized inmates get injuries in conflicts, depending on violence. The idea of the unsafe environment induced by officers' victimization in correctional settings leads to escalated levels of fear of self-disclosure (Vogel et al., 2020). The stance is determined as an essential aspect of therapy resistance.
