Preliminary investigations do not necessarily yield enough information to prosecute a criminal case. Despite a thorough preliminary investigation, many cases require a follow - up investigation. Use your textbook, the Internet, and / or Strayer Library to research articles on crime scene investigation.
Write a paper in which you:
1. Assemble a set of guidelines on conducting preliminary investigation for a criminal case.
2. Propose one (1) strategy that criminal investigators should take in order to conduct an efficient follow-up investigation. Provide a rationale to support your response.
3. Select two major crimes (e.g. sudden deaths, sex related crimes) and compare and contrast the key differences in reporting the two major crimes that you selected.
4. Determine the three (3) most important characteristics of an effective criminal investigator and discuss the importance of each characteristic you determined.
5. Support or critique the argument that the criminal investigation process should maintain the balance regarding freedom of information through media outlets and privacy rights of alleged perpetrators of crime. Provide a rationale to support your response.
6. Use at least two (2) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar type Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Criminal investigations need to be handled with care. What is done at the initial stages of the investigation can determine the final outcome of the case. Therefore, there are a set of guidelines that must be followed to ensure that the case is well investigated.
* The officer that first arrives at the scene will have to protect the lives of the people and render aid as needed.
* They will then have to protect the crime scene and tape it all round to ensure that any unauthorized person does not get to access it.
* Upon arriving at the scene, the detective will first have to observe events and conditions and not down any remarks by witnesses.
* They will then have to establish of an offense has been committed and its exact nature.
* Determine the suspects and ensure they arrest them if they are at the scene or if they can be traced through immediate pursuit.
* Issue an “all points bulletin” on all necessary information concerning the suspects so that other officers can be on the lookout for them.
* Ensure that they identify all witnesses.
* Arrange for evidence collection.
* Determine all details concerning the nature and circumstances leading up to the offense.
* Record all relevant information on the issued report forms.
Strategies for conducting follow up investigations in criminal cases
Follow up investigations are needed to bring cases to a conclusion in a satisfactory manner. It is not possible to solve all cases readily. However, it is important to determine the solvability of a case and how serious it is (Ludwig, Fraser & Williams, 2012). One of the strategies that can be employed is conduction additional interrogations and interviews. After finishing the initial review of the case, the investigating detective needs to should determine if there are any new witnesses to the crime and interview them accordingly regarding the case. They also need to determine if there is any other potential suspect and interrogate them as needed. Interrogations must be guided by state policies and the rights of the suspects being interrogated must be observed at all times.
