Why did journeymen Cordwainers (shoemakers) in Philadelphia form the Federal Society of Journeymen Cordwainers in 1794? What strategies did they use to meet their objectives?
According to Patrick Grubbs, shoemakers started the Federal Society to protect journeymen workforce from employees who would agree to work for low pay, known as “scab labor.” Also, they sought to protect their wages by pushing for a raise with increased orders. The society achieved these two objectives by organizing several strikes, which stopped production and led to defaulting shoe and boot orders, thereby making the masters give in to their demands (Grubbs, n.d.).
