           The Colony and Dominion of Virginia and the Province of Maryland made up the Chesapeake colonies. British invaders arrived here in 1607 and formed the first settlement in Jamestown, which served as the capital of Virginia up to 1699 (Lumen, n.d.). The invaders settled in these two colonies and established tobacco cultivation on a large scale, which later led to the population growth and expansion to other areas such as the Province of Carolina and the Province of Georgia to cumulatively constitute the Southern Colonies. 
Settlement Patterns
           The English invaders first settled in Jamestown in the Colony of Virginia in 1607. After failing to find the resources they sought, i.e., gold, silver, and sassafras, they turned to tobacco agriculture (Lumen, n.d.). Settling, however, was not easy. The terrain was marshy, and there was no clean drinking water. Furthermore, diseases such as smallpox, malaria, cholera, and measles raved the population, both the locals and the settlers.
