Part A: The Physiographic Regions of Europe
The Western Uplands/Northern Uplands have a distinctive ancient rock that was formed by the process of glaciation, creating sheets of ice. The physical features of the region include lakes, marshlands, and narrow inlets of the sea with tall and rugged cliffs. The countries that are part of this region are the following: Iceland, Finland, Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia, Spain, France, and Portugal.
The North European Plain is the most populated region among the four because of its non-elevated state that promotes agriculture in the area. In addition to this, travel and communication are also easier in the North European Plains. It spans eastward from the southern United Kingdom to Russia. It consists of Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Poland, parts of France, Belarus, and the Baltic states. Oder, Elbe, and Rhine are some of the accessible rivers in the region.
The Central Uplands is a wooded and less rugged area, that has a much lower altitude than the Alpine Mountains. It spans east to west through central Europe which includes the following countries: Belgium and western France, Czech Republic, southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Belgium’s the Ardennes of Belgium, Germany’s Taunus and the Black Forest, the Czech Republic’s the Sudeten and Ore, and France’s the Vosges and the Massif Central are the notable highlands in the region.
