In the ancient Greece history, Sparta was a community of worriers which gained its power after the Peloponnesian war when they beat the city-state Athens. The rulers of Sparta consisted of a council of elders and two kings. There was as well an assembly of citizens but it did not have power. Loyalty and military service were the center of the culture of this worrying community. Boys who attained the age of seven were required to get an education sponsored by the state. They were as well required to get into military training and a program of socialization by the name Agoge. Endurance, discipline, and duty are the major things that the system emphasized. Despite the fact that the Spartan women were inactive in the military when compared to other Greek women; they enjoyed a lot of freedom and status. The Spartan men were military professionals leaving the manual work to slaves. The Sparta society had military prowess, yes but it was short-lived after Thebes defeating them in Leuctra war. This paper discusses the society, military, marriage, and women and concludes with the decline of the Spartan society.
Spartan Society
The Spartan society occupied a small city-state Greek presently known as Laconia. The society consisted of three groups; the Spartans who were the full citizens, the Helots who were the slaves and the Perioeci who were neither citizens nor slaves. The perioeci consisted of traders and craftsmen. Aforementioned, all able Spartan males were involved in compulsory Agonge. The men lived communally till they became adults and they devoted themselves to serve the military. Loyalty was everything. The Helots consisted of the captives who whose dominions had been conquered. They served as farmers, military attendants, nurses and any other day-to-day activity. The Helots outnumbered the Spartans. To prevent any form of uprising, the Spartans mistreated them.
Spartan Military
Unlike any other city-state in Greece, Sparta focused on the military. There was only one occupation for the males; soldier. Military training began at the age of 7 when the males enrolled in the Agoge education system. These boys lived in the austere condition and communally. They were subjected to various physical competitions (violent ones). Often, they would be rationed meagerly with the expectations that they would master survival skills such as stealing food. Those who showed potential in leadership would participate in Crypteia. This was a police secret service whose main purpose was to terrorize the troublemaking Helots and murder them. One would get into full military service at the age of 20. They retired at the age of 60.
