There are various Slavic ornaments worn by men and women, but either had detailed headdress ornaments, or simple headdresses. There are regional variations including those that are flowery and hair accessories also indicate the different stages in life and identity (Shevchenko, 2018). The first picture shows peremitka (peremetka) made of cotton cloth with ornamentation that are women or embroidered. The peremitka is the headdress of a matron, unlike the floral headdresses of young women which mostly reflected their purity and marital eligibility. The costumes with a headdress show the traditions of the Slavic people, richness and color of the typical Ukrainian apparel is more common for the dresses, but even headdresses were still common.
Gender social standing, and age influenced the choice of head wrap with the peremitka is an important part of the social and cultural values of Ukrainians. Worobec (1990) pointed out that along peasant families Ukrainian the unchaste girls were made to wear headdresses common among the married women and their hair was unplaited during the 19th century. For young girls wreaths were made of flowers including artificial ones (Cheban, 2018). Clothing signifies symbolic value, and while they headdress protect the head they express the appropriate sense of style for maiden women (Snodgrass, 2015). The social and ritual context of wearing the head wrap highlights the importance of self-respect and the married women devoted more time and effort to wrap their heads with the peremitka.
Social practice and social constraints then meant that women had to conform, whereby the head adornment and covering show the social ranking. There are gendered divisions since men did not have similar headdresses, attitudes towards male and female sexuality. On one hand, the headdresses are a form of social control, but on the other allow women to express themselves, choosing what is available and preferable to the matrons.
