Progressivism refers to a social-political movement whose formation brought significant changes in the American politics and governing towards the end of the 19th century. The movement is famous for championing for the issues of inequality, social problems like racism and discrimination and other economic problem facing the nation.
The first approach used by the progressives was to expose the social injustices in the society through the media, elected leaders and investigative journalists such as Jacob Ricks who became a prominent voice in exposing social injustices and inequalities hence rising social rawness. The second tactic used by the progressives was to pass laws that would bring change. For examples, the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act were among the passed laws which benefited the American business community and consumers in a positive way. Another significant law passed was the Adamson Act that introduced the eight-hours a day working time for industrial workers. The third method employed was the pushing for constitutional ratifications. The movement pushed for the amendments of the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th sections of the constitutions; amendments that grant women the rights to vote and the people's capacity to elect the senators directly.
However, the progressivism movement had its share of disadvantages as well. One of the failures was the concentration of power vested in elected leaders whom later came abused for ther personal aggrandizement.
