‘The Souls of Black Folk,"
In the article "The Souls of Black Folk," written by Du Bois, the author presents information from 1860 to 1872 relating to the lives and challenges faced by the American Negro. Some of the main points of chapter II are that the differences in color between the men in Asia, Africa, and America were part of the cause of the civil war. During the war, the frightened fugitives appeared within Tennessee and Virginia borders. How these newcomers were treated also brought a lot of controversies, Butlers thought they should be put to work while Fremont thought they should be set free. How did the Negro issue play a part in causing the civil war? Why did Ben Butler view the fugitives as contraband of war and should be forced to work, yet they were still humans searching for a peaceful place to live? Why were the social reforms met with opposition? All these questions arise after reading this chapter.
