Ludlow massacre was an attack perpetrated on striking coal mine workers by the members of Colorado armed guards and militia hired by the Rockefeller-owned Colorado Iron and Oil Company. Ludlow was a settlement in Colorado where mine workers lived with their families. The attack happened On April 20, 1914 when armed militiamen opened fire on women and children in the tents after a bomb had gone off signaling the start of the massacre. (Fink 1914)
Ludlow was a town in the rocky mountains of Colorado. It was predominantly inhabited by mine workers. Major infrastructure was owned by the coal corporations from groceries to doctors to houses all were owned by the company and overinflated prices. This meant that there was overreliance onCoal Corporation for daily living. There was a lot of corporation oppression where the dissenting voices would be cut off major amenities or even thrown out of town altogether, and guards were hired to do that. At that time, labor laws that were supposed to protect workers were flawed, and Colorado registered double digits in on job fatality rate. (Weber 2014)
In summer 1913, workers in the coal corporations had begun to agitate for their rights. They formed representatives to negotiate on their behalf. Some of their grievances included low pay, long and unregulated hours, and management practices they felt were corrupt. They channeled the grievances through company representatives who were rebuffed and turned down by the corporations. A month later, around eight thousand Colorado mine workers went on strike. They demanded a ten percent pay rise and also wanted the organization to enforce an eight-hour working day, the right to use any store rather than just the company warehouse, and choose their houses and doctors, strict enforcement of Colorado's laws, especially mine safety laws and the right to live and trade outside company owned town be granted to them.
When the strike began, workers were evicted from corporation owned houses and forced to live in tents on a parcel that was leased by United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). UMWA activities in Ludlow had long been thwarted by the Rockefeller-owned Colorado iron and fuel company.The strikers pitched tents and shifted their operations to these tents.
