Thanks for your thoughtful response. I have been spending the week reading them and want to share some of my thoughts.
The issue I want to discuss here is our life after the pandemic. In order to prepare for it, we also have to talk about how we should spend our time right now. The present and future are closely related in this way.
Many students illustrate their difficult situation: no school, no work, isolated at home, and the life seems unsustainable.
One of the biggest frustrations is that we cannot see the future, we don’t know when it is the end and how it is going to end, and what the world will look like when it ends. But I would argue: since we are all stuck at home, at least our time is with us. We should spend our time thinking about future and prepare for it.
Just read a report: about 37% Americans can work at home. This is the upper limit by a stretch, despite the rapid development of online technology. Those who are able to work from home usually get better pay even on the normal days. Some business, such as Zoom and Amazon, have profited enormously from the pandemic. Eventually, we will go back to the normal but I guess it is going to be a “new normal.” Our economic structure and way of life are going to be transformed and we should be ready for it.
I have a 20 year old daughter, a junior at NYU. Se we have a lot of discussion on those issues at home. She did a few interviews before the outbreak and had a real sense of the job market. She was majoring economics and math, but during the interviews, she felt that people on the other side were not that interested in her other aspects of training but very enthusiastic about her works on coding and data science, two new fields that she just started a year ago. For example, an intern opportunity for CVS. What they expected you to do? Data science. Everything is driven by data.
This was before the outbreak. The pandemic only accelerated the change we have been experiencing. All the important decisions, from projected death toll to when to reopen the country, are based on some mathematic model or data science. From Amazon to traditional retailers, the business are all based on data analysis and projection.
In many countries, whether you like it or not, the government use app to track the movement of the people who have been confirmed to carry the virus. We will read an article on the controversy about this kind of technologies next week. But this technology has been highly effective in containing the pandemic and has strong public support in many countries. I expect it will stay after everything is over. And those technologies highly rely on coding.
You probably know that dating went online a long time ago. What dating looks like in the age of social distancing? How about exercise? The virtual training has been going on for a while and now is booming. I was training for Boston Marathon, which has been postponed. So I switched to bicycling on my trainer, using a online tool called Rouvy. I have been climbing the Pyrenees and Alps, with some virtual peers or real peers in other countries, for the last few days, and it was fun. I would probably keep it after the pandemic. Some people argue the virtual training will become a new religion. Don’t forget: since we have Garmin, Strava, and many other tracking tools, an unpresented amount of personal data in exercise is online, which has transformed medical research, which also employs the big data technology.
Our family have stopped going to the supermarket for two weeks. We rely on food delivery. Theatrically, Amazon provides this service through the Whole Food. Then we realized that the Whole Food could hardly keep up with the demand and became highly unreliable. As some critics point out, Amazon has a grand idea of grocery delivery but failed to rise to the occasion due to bad execution on the ground. A local Chinese restaurant did rise to the occasion. It was supposed to close down and fire all employees. Instead, the owner realized that he could use the suppliers to the restaurant to secure the foods for his customers. Now the restaurant provides a very efficient service of grocery delivery to a small community and its business is booming. After the pandemic, I am not sure if we want to go back to supermarket again after enjoying the delivery service. Somehow I feel that if you are able to build a local network of consumers in a few towns, using your private car and computer, you would build a significant business asset. Sooner or later, a big supermarket chain or online retailer such as Amazon would buy your business.
In short, the world will be constructed in a very different way and we should stay ahead of the curve. I went to college living $5 a month, had a career in China, only to see the country was lockdown by a violent crush down on democratic movement, in which I participated. Then I literally abandon everything I had there, learned a new language and came to the U.S. Now I am not only teaching here, but also provide many services to China online. I went through a lot of challenges in my life. Sometimes they were devastating. But eventually I learned to be positive—taking any challenge or problem as an opportunity.
