However, during the time when the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and the Constitution were being drafted, even the idea of equality is only at its inception CITATION Car16 \l 1033 (Carr, 2016). As compared to how we use it today – in a “holistic, non-discriminatory, gender neutral, classless, etc.” way – equality was conceived before as “equal rights for rich white men” CITATION Car16 \l 1033 (Carr, 2016). By going back to how equality was perceived before, which is among its “citizens”, we could easily see that the idea of equal rights were even legitimized by limiting who is considered as the Citizens and who are not.
