How did the rise of domestic and worldwide terrorism in the early 21st century impact Americans?
Anti-American sentiments have significantly grown over time, especially at the turn of the century and from the mainly Islamic territories (Cobbs, Blum & Gjerde, 2012). This tension turned on its head with the 9/11 attacks on American soil, which became the most devastating terrorist attack in the nation’s history. Ever since, there have been various threats and minor attacks such as the Boston bombing and other isolated cases. All these ushered Americans to a new age of terrorism and radicalism. The impact is that Americans realized security was of utmost importance, and took all the necessary measures to ensure the same. The people also realized that security started with them. On the national level, the DHS was formed to also enhance further security within the nation’s borders. As a nation, Americans also became more interested in what was happening outside their borders when it came to the war on terrorism, since it could affect them back home.
