Tobacco, nicotiana tabacum, and nicotiana rustica are native to the Americas. Commercial cultivation has continued since the 16th century (Mark, 2021). The US and Mexico are among the important producers, as are other Latin American countries. The psychoactive substance is now a narcotic, but it has also been used as a pesticide and painkiller. Among indigenous communities in the Americas, tobacco's sacred nature made it a common and widespread plant. However, commercialization of the plant made the crop available to more people, and there was increased demand for tobacco for cigarette smoking. Tobacco is a labor-intensive crop, and on average requiring more work per hectare than any other type of crop.
In other parts of America outside the US, tobacco was less of a cash crop and was even used in rituals and ceremonies. Among communities such as the Maya, who considered the plant medicine, the crop was also sacred. The crop could also be exchanged with other available crops or items in the barter trade. Tobacco was a plant to cure different ailments. The crop's importance in religious ceremonies and medicine reflects the crop's use for special occasions and not for everyday use. However, European contact with the people in the new world influenced the crop's growth and popularity beyond areas where the crop was used. 
In the US, tobacco was cultivated on a large scale from the 17th century, mainly in Jamestown, Virginia (US History.org., n.d.). Virginia was heavily dependent on tobacco and efforts to diversify the agricultural economy as it was the only crop where there were fair market prices. Tobacco consumes a lot of nutrients, and the land was left to fallow for three years, and the demand for land grew to find areas with better soils (US History.org., n.d.).
