The Revolutionary War was one like no other and has shaped history on the road towards the independence of Americans. The war was recorded from 1775 to 1783 when the North American British colonies fought against colonial rule (Digital History, 2021). The war started with the Americans protesting against the hefty taxes that were being levied without proper representation. The essay will look into four major problems the British faced and why and how each was difficult to overcome.
The first problem the British faced during the war was that they were not familiar with the local American terrain and the continental army. Conquering the colonies was nearly an impossible problem to overcome. The British army was unable to reach the countryside due to the huge geographical representation of the colonies (Berkin et al., 2014). Due to this inability, their loyalists were exposed to the fury and vengeance of the patriots, and they could not reach out to help them (Digital History, 2021). Additionally, their army had not been taught to handle guerrilla-style warfare in the huge wildlands. The army had only been exposed to European-style warfare, which involved action on an open battlefield.
The second problem the British faced was fighting a massive empire that was widely spread out across the globe. With their decreased effectiveness and being spread very thinly, it was difficult to overcome this problem. The Americans had the upper hand since they received reinforcement and support from other countries, including France, the Netherlands, and Spain (Digital History, 2021).
